If you have been diagnosed with Temporomandibular Disorder, you’ll likely to find a variety of acronyms used interchangeably, including TMJ, TMD and TMJD. What’s the difference? Let’s take a look.

TMJ vs. TMD and TMJD

TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is the hinged joint connecting the lower jaw (mandible) to the skull (temporal bone), located immediately in front of each ear. The joints are very flexible allowing for smooth movement of the jaw up and down, and side to side. Muscles attached to and surrounding the jaw joints control the position and movement of the jaw. The temporomandibular joint is the most constantly used joint in the entire body.

When the temporomandibular joint becomes inflamed (through stress, injury, or damage), symptoms can arise leading to localized pain in the jaw, jaw joint and/or the muscles surrounding the jaw. It’s this pain that we call Temporomandibular Joint Disorder, or in short form, TMJD or TMD.

When it comes down to it, TMJ is the actual joint in your body whereas TMJD or TMD refers to the symptoms you are experiencing.
