TMJD Symptom Series, Part 1: Jaw Pain
Our bodies are truly a wonder. When you think of the thousands of unique body parts that are all coming together to function properly, it’s hard to imagine how our bodies actually “know” how to operate as one unit. But sometimes, our bodies do not function properly, they fall out of sync. It’s because of this imbalance that we tend to feel pain or soreness.
The symptoms of TMJD (or temporomandibular disorder) are vast and sometimes obscure. That’s why we decided to start this Symptoms Series – to share what pains are commonly associated with TMJD. We’ll go through different pains and aches found across the body so that you can take the steps to identifying and eventually alleviating your pain.
Here are 5 TMJD symptoms that are associated with jaw pain:
1. Limited opening
You notice that you can only open your mouth so far or you feel pain in front of your ears as your mouth opens
2. Inability to open the jaw smoothly or evenly
When you open your mouth wider, you are unable to do so in a swift, fluid motion
3. Your jaw shifts to the side
As you go to open your mouth, you can feel the mandible (jaw) jilt or deviate to one side, as if it becomes disjointed
4. Lockjaw
As you open or close your mouth, the mandible (jaw) locks in place and you are unable to continue opening or closing
5. Clicking, popping, or grating
When you open or close your mouth, you “hear” clicking, popping or grating echoing through your ears from the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
